McLaren MP4/8 - 1993
This is the McLaren MP4/8 that the late great Ayrton Senna drove in the 1993 Formula One season, Senna and the car achieved 5 victories throughout the season, which was quite an achievement, as it had inferior power compared to its chief rivals; Williams and Benetton.
The main reason for the lack of power from the MP4/8 was that McLaren had to make do with the Ford HBD7 3.5 litre V8 engine, which compared to the Renault engine found in the Williams, and the higher spec Ford engine found in the Benetton, lacked way behind on torque and bhp.
This is the very car Ayrton Senna had yet another storming season behind the wheel of an F1 car, in the cars debut race in South Africa, the triple World Champion drove to a second place finish, the very next race in Brazil he took the chequered flag for the top spot on the podium, and again for the next race, the European GP which was held at Donnington Park UK. At this stage of the season, his team mate; Michael Andretti, had yet to score a point. Ayrton picked another 2nd place finish at the Spanish GP, and the very next race at Monaco he was on the top step of the podium yet again; this really is the definition of 'Driving the pants' of the thing!. He also gained victories at the last two races of the season, at the Japanese GP and Australian GP. Other notable finishes were, 4th at France, 5th at the British GP, 4th at the German GP, and 4th at Spa in Belgium.
