Malaysian Formula One Grand Prix
Built on the site of a former palm oil plantation, the SEPANG International Circuit was completed in a record 14 months and was opened on March 9, 1999, by the Prime Minister of Malaysia.
Sepang's astonishing facilities include an enormous three-storeyPit Lane Building which, as well as the 33 pits, contains all the management offices and officials' quarters. Next door is the Welcome Building which has shops, restaurants and an exhibition centre. To the other side of the Pit Building is a Medical Centre that can be converted in an emergency into a fully-equipped hospital, complete with operating theatres. The centrally located main grandstands guarantee fantastic views of the action, and can seat 32'000 people as well as accommodating various corporate entertainment suites. At just under 3.5 miles long, the full Sepang Grand Prix Circuit contains 15 turns and 8 straights, which means some of the highest top speeds in Formula One are seen here. The width of the track also offers plenty of overtaking opportunities. The unique parallel configuration of the start/finish and back straights, with just a single hairpin in between them, allows the track to be divided into North and South circuits for smaller events, such as Go-Kart racing and other smaller race events. |
